Start Her Up: Getting Your Business Started
Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Start Her Up: Getting Your Business Started

On April 15th, 2010 I participated in an amazing start up fair for women entrepreneurs called “Start Her Up: Getting Your Business Started” hosted by In Good Company Workplaces and Baby Bites.

The evening started with a group of women at various tables offering their time to help other women who needed help starting their business with free mini consultations in their field of expertise. I was at a table offering web consultations on the topics of: Web Design, Logo Design, Wordpress, Twitter, Facebook, Social Media, Blogging and Search Engine Optimization. The room filled quickly, and it turned into a very lively session of Q&A for the women at each table.

The evening continued with a Q&A panelist session led by Adelaide & Amy of In Good Company. The women in this panel were hand picked to represent a robust and diverse group of women entrepreneurs. They shared the challenges they went through when starting their business, how they grew their business and what resources helped them most. It was a very insightful panel that left me feeling empowered with tools to further grow my own business. The panelists included:

Marissa Lippert, Nourish Nutrition Counseling & Communications

Andreea Ayers, Tees for Change

Emily Wolper, E. Wolper Inc.

Lisa Bochner, The Wonder Girls

Jodi Katz, Just Say Jodi

Regina Angeles, Talent2050

Mary Ann Schwanewede, Metro Tots

This is not a fair to be missed, the careful attention to the women presented here and resources offered were a powerful combination of resources for women looking to start their own business.

To be notified about the next fair follow In Good Company, Baby Bites and JPD Studio on twitter.

ADC Young Guns 8 Entries Launch Party
Thursday, March 25th, 2010

ADC Young Guns 8

Woohoo! At JPD Studio, we love a good party, and that’s just what we got last night at the Art Directors Club Young Guns 8 Entries launch event.

ADC_YG8_JesThe Art Directors Club hosted the party March 24 to announce the launch of the call for entries for the 8th Young Guns competition. The Young Guns Award was created by the ADC in 1996 to identify and honor young creatives under age 30 for their talent, ambition, and potential to impact the future of a multi-disciplinary industry. It’s an amazing competition, and the party to announce the call for entries was great too! The walls of the beautiful ADC space, located at 106 W. 29th St. in New York City, were covered with blank paper for all those present to make their mark. Watching the creativity flow was as fun as meeting some of the great artists present.

VitaOf course, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to make our mark on the party by creating a huge version of the JPD logo on paper with marker. And Jessica, Kim and Vita even pitched in to help out during the event as volunteers! Many thanks to the ADC and their sponsors for putting together such a great event for such a cool competition.

Check out the Young Guns competition (and enter, if you qualify), at ADCYoungGuns.org. The deadline for entries is May 12, 2010. See you at the next party!

The Wilde Years: Four Decades of Shaping Visual Culture
Friday, October 23rd, 2009

The Wilde Years: Four Decades of Shaping Visual Culture

This Tuesday, JPD Studio Creative Director Jessica Perilla attended an opening reception of The Wilde Years: Four Decades of Shaping Visual Culture at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. The exhibition celebrates designers, art directors and other creative professionals who have graduated from the BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department at SVA. It was organized in recognition of Department Chair Richard Wilde’s 40th anniversary at the College.

As a former student of Wilde’s, an alumna of the department, and now an instructor of Dreamweaver at SVA, Jessica says she was thrilled to attend the reception with Yaritsa Arenas of PixieGirl Designs, and fellow SVA alumnae Clair Lim and Jin Jin.

“The work was amazing, and it really showed the diversity of Richard Wilde,” Jessica says. “All these generations he’s influenced; everyone knows about Richard Wilde. It’s his approach and style that really make him stand out from the other professors. His assignments are really challenging but they push you to see things differently or in a way that you wouldn’t normally think of. He really pushed me to see things differently.”

The exhibit was designed by Kevin O’Callaghan, chair of 3D Design at SVA. The exhibit space places familiar advertisements, book covers, CD packaging and posters within everyday settings. A comfortable reading nook highlights book jacket design and feature covers for James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Living History and Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, among other best sellers. Subway advertisements, including theatrical posters for Broadway hits like Rent, Chicago and John Leguizamo’s Freak, are on view within a mock subway platform. A life-size bus shelter includes advertising campaigns for Anheuser-Busch, Pepsi and Showtime, while a mini-screening room projects television commercials and music videos.

“Kevin and his team did an extraordinary job with the exhibit,” says Jes. “They worked really hard – even staying overnight right before the opening – to bring the whole thing together. It looks great.”

For more information about the exhibit, which opened Oct. 13 and runs through Nov. 7, please visit the SVA website.

Childrens Hospital Mural is Complete!
Friday, October 16th, 2009

The Finished Mural

There’s a little more color these days at Montefiore Childrens Hospital in the Bronx thanks to the efforts of JPD Studio’s Creative Director Jessica Perilla and the fantastic artists who participated in the latest Mural Project.

Over the course of three Saturdays, roughly 40 artists participated to help create the finished product pictured above. The colorful mural spans three walls and features the New York City skyline and some folks enjoying activities in a vivid, lovely green park.

JPD Studio is a proud sponsor of The Mural Project, which was founded by JPD Studio’s Creative Director Jessica Perilla in April 2007, and encourages artists to collaborate and donate their skills by creating lively, nurturing and visually stimulating murals in hospital walls to enhance healing for sick patients.

If you’d like to learn more about this cool effort, please visit TheMuralProject.com.

Watch for the JPD Studio Team on “Martha”
Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

We’re feeling like very lucky ladies here at JPD Studio; we had the opportunity to attend the taping of the “tech show” of the Martha Stewart Show yesterday!

Martha Stewart Technology Show, NYC

Photograph by Jessica Perilla

Jessica, Deb, Kim, Krista and our friend Olga of Lipstockist.com were in the audience for the show, which will air in New York City at 11 am this Friday, Oct. 2. The topic was technology, and the show’s goal was to get viewers up-to-date on Twitter, Facebook, MyYahoo, and more! Twitter co-founder Biz Stone explained how “tweeting” has changed communication; Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes de-mystified the popular site; plus, we received essential tips from New York Times tech columnist David Pogue and Yahoo web editor Heather Cabot. It was so much fun!

At JPD Studio, we believe the social networking opportunities that sites like Facebook and Twitter offer are a brilliant, easy and free way to drive traffic to your site, so we were really excited to see Martha speak to the people behind these huge movements. We were encouraged to update our own Twitter and Facebook feeds during the taping; it was really fun to tweet and update our statuses to tell everyone what was happening in real time. Krista was even able to ask Martha a question about the way this new way of communicating is changing our personal lives and the workplace. It was so exciting!

Martha was fantastic in person and her studio in Chelsea was gorgeous. We’re inspired and so happy we were able to be a part of her show, especially since it was about tech communication: something that’s important to us. If you’re in New York City, please tune in at 11 am this Friday, Oct. 2 on NBC to watch! For a full listing of her show times, visit MarthaStewart.com.

This latest project at Montefiore Children’s Hospital will take up three walls, so the project has been split into two days; Sat., Sept. 26 and Sat., Oct. 3. JPD Studio will be sponsoring and supplying all paints and brushes, but artists are free to bring their own supplies if preferred. The hospital will also be filming for a documentary about the project, so they’ll be photographing and recording a time lapse of the artists painting, as well as conducting interviews of any artists who would like to participate! The Mural Project team will need all the help they can get to complete this special project in two days, so please tell all your creative friends, and RSVP for one day or both at TheMuralProject.com if you know you can make it!

The Montefiore Children’s Hospital is located at 305 E 161st St, Bronx, NY 10451. The project starts at 9 am, and will be on the first floor, all the way to the back of the floor. Take the 4 train there, get off at 161 St./Yankee Stadium, then head southeast on E 161st St toward Gerard Ave.

We at JPD Studio are very excited to announce the next Web2Fem meetup. Our fantastic guest speaker will be Law of Attraction Life and Business Coach Linda DeCarlo who will be presenting “Extraordinary Possibilities: How to Align with and Attract the Life and Business of Your Dreams.

Jessica specifically asked Linda to speak because she has personally been an invaluable resource to JPD Studio. She was fortunate enough to meet with Linda earlier this year, and in just one consultation she pinpointed the areas in the business that Jessica needed to focus on. In her case, the answer was adding two key people to the JPD Studio team. Jessica says Linda pointed her in the right direction and has helped her take JPD Studio to the next level.

Here are some key items you will learn at this event:

• How to create a powerful road map for life and business success
• Four challenges entrepreneurial women face and how to move past them
• What the Law of Attraction is and how it works
• How to use this information to feel more grounded, focused and empowered!

This event, sponsored by JPD Studio, will be on July 30th at 6pm, held at the beautiful In Good Company workplace. Michael Ian Kaye Presentation at AIGA
Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Last night Michael Ian Kaye presented at AIGA in NY. It was an amazing evening of who’s who in the world of book jacket publishing. Carin Goldberg kicked off the evening with a haiku about Michael. Then Michael began his presentation which was composed of 10 main topics which had actually been selected via a poll on his website. He told many insightful stories about his work. During the presentation he expressed how he dislikes titles, for example giving himself the title of Creative Director, Advertising Guy or Graphic Designer, among others, because he simply considers himself a Visual Problem Solver.

Midway through the presentation there was an “Oprah” moment, while he was showcasing one of his latest book designs for the School of Visual Arts, he asked us to look under our chairs. Everyone in the audience received the book courtesy of SVA. In the end, we were all inspired by Kaye’s love, excellence and commitment to graphic design. He then invited everyone in the audience for drinks at the Black Door, his treat.
